CITIZENS COMPASS-– Ahead of 2027 general elections, in Nigeria, the Media Transformative Group (MTG) on Sunday, tasked the media on professionalism.
The group disclosed this in its Easter message.
MTG emphasised that the symbolic essence of Easter—sacrifice, renewal, and hope—should inspire journalists to act as agents of national stability rather than purveyors of divisive rhetoric.
The MTG leadership noted that with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) already rolling out the revised 2027 election timetable, the role of the press in safeguarding democracy has become more critical.
The group urged practitioners to resist Politicised narratives, avoid being used by political actors to spread misinformation or “fake news”.
It also encouraged them to prioritize verification and ensure that all reports, especially those concerning party primaries scheduled to begin on April 23, 2026, are fact-checked and balanced.
The group consists of General Managers and Heads of Radio Stations in Oyo State under its Chairman and General Manager, Pensioners’ 106.7 FM, Dr. Babatunde Tiamiyu, urged media professionals to use their platforms for dousing tensions and promote messages of unity in line with the spirit of the season.
The Secretary of MTG, Prince Adejare Amuda, and the Publicity & Creative Director, Mr. Stephen Adedigba, stressed that professionalism is the only shield journalists have against loss of public trust. “As we mark the resurrection of Christ, let us also see it as a period to resurrect the core values of our noble profession—truth, integrity, and objectivity,” he stated.
The statement added that the creative industry and media must work hand-in-hand to ensure election coverage is not just informative but also constructive.
The group challenged media houses to invest in digital literacy and capacity building to navigate the complexities of the upcoming political cycle.
It concluded by wishing all Nigerians a peaceful Easter celebration, urging citizens to remain vigilant and engaged as the countdown to the 2027 polls begins.
