Gwo, gwo, gwo singer, Mike Ejeagha, dies

CITIZENS COMPASS– The original singer of the popular song, Gwo, gwo, gwo, Mike Ejeagha, is dead.

The Enugu State high life singer died at the age of 95 at about 8p.m on Friday.

He died at the 32 Garrison Hospital in Enugu, following a prolonged illness.

His eldest son, Emma Ejeagha, confirmed the news of his father’s death on Saturday, in a telephone conversation.

He said his father had been preparing the family for his passing for some time. According to him, Mike had clearly instructed that his body should not be embalmed or left in the morgue for too long. He also described his father as “a peace-loving man and a genius.”

Mike Ejeagha had been battling prostate cancer since 2006 and had been in and out of hospitals for many years. His health worsened two weeks ago. Although he was discharged briefly after showing signs of improvement, he was taken back to the hospital last Tuesday, where he eventually died

The late music legend was a dominant voice on Nigerian airwaves in the 1980s with his unique style of Igbo folk music that resonated across generations.

He will be remembered for transforming Igbo folklore and proverbs into captivating music.
