Heartfelt Congratulations on the Historic Return of 119 Benin Artifacts from the Netherlands

I write with immense joy and reverence to congratulate Your Royal Majesty on the landmark return of 119 looted Benin artifacts from the Kingdom of the Netherlands—an extraordinary moment in our shared history that occurred on June 18, 2025, a date forever etched in the hearts of the Edo people and indeed all Nigerians.

This historic restitution, coming around the 111th anniversary of the restoration of the sacred Benin monarchy, serves as a powerful symbol of the resilience of our cultural identity, the unbroken spirit of our ancestors, and the divine continuity of our royal institution.

The world now bears witness to the triumph of justice over injustice, the triumph of heritage over theft, and the triumph of truth over the silence of history. This event is not only a restoration of sacred objects, but a restoration of dignity, memory, and spiritual balance. It reaffirms the global recognition of the Benin Kingdom’s unmatched contributions to African civilization, artistry, and governance.

Your Royal Majesty’s wisdom, relentless commitment, and diplomatic grace have made this long-awaited return possible. Through your leadership, these sacred treasures have journeyed back across oceans—not as mere artifacts, but as symbols of ancestral presence, power, and legacy.

As these items return to their ancestral soil, they bring healing, pride, and inspiration to both the young and old. The Edo people celebrate. Nigeria rejoices. Africa is proud.

We pray that Your Royal Majesty’s reign will continue to be long, prosperous, and guided by the divine spirit of our forefathers. May this achievement inspire continued unity, cultural enlightenment, and the recovery of all that was unjustly taken.

May your crown never fall.

May the kingdom flourish under your watch.

Long live the Oba! Long live the Kingdom of Benin!

With utmost respect and boundless admiration,

Hon. Amb Sir JP Hamzaosa Ode-Idahosa

Secretary General
