Students set ablaze principal’s house over N15m exam registration

CITIZENS COMPASS—Some aggrieved students of Gyutiev Model College in Saghev Ward, Guma Local Government Area of Benue State, have reportedly set ablaze the residence of their principal, Mr. Isaac Yina, for allegedly paying N15m for the 2025 National Examinations Council (NECO) examination.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Friday, a few days after after a recent attack claimed 200 lives in Yelwata community.

The students alleged that the N15m payment was aside the official fees for the examination.

About 178 final-year students were said to have paid ₦85,000 to the principal before discovering that their names were not submitted for the examination.

The outraged students allegedly mobilized and attacked the residence.

It was gathered that the principal had been evading both students and their parents in recent weeks, allegedly refusing to provide proof of registration or refund their money.

Reacting, the spokesperson, Benue State Police Command, SP Udeme Edet, said the command had not yet received a formal complaint but assured that an investigation would commence once a report is officially filed.

At press time, the State Ministry of Education was yet to issue an official statement.
