
PEDOPHILIA in children: symptoms, effects, management

CITIZENS COMPASS—Pedophilia is a psychiatric disorder characterized by persistent and intense sexual attraction towards prepubescent children, typically those of 13 years or younger.
It is essential to understand that pedophilia is a mental health issue, and not all individuals with pedophilic tendencies act on their impulses. This article is to create awareness among parents for the need to take proper care of their children against pedophilia/ child sexual abuse in our society.
Child
A child is typically defined as a human being below the age of 18, reference to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the “Child.”
Children are vulnerable and require protection from exploitation, abuse, harm and other forms of molestation.
Historical perspective of pedophilia flash to ancient civilizations: Evidence of child sexual abuse are still experienced in ancient cultures, such as Greece and Rome.
Middle Ages: Child sexual abuse was often overlooked or justified in19th and 20th centuries with growing aware.
Modern era: Increased research, awareness, and efforts to prevent child sexual abuse.

Pedophilia was formally recognized as a psychiatric disorder in the DSM-III (1980).
