Police arrest traditional leader for illegal possession of firearms
CITIZENS COMPASS— The Akwa Ibom State Police Command on Thursday, said it has arrested a village head simply identified as Chief Edet.
Edet, who until his arrest, headed Asik Ubofa Fishing Settlement in Effiat Clan, Mbo Local Government Area.
His arrest followed alleged illegal possession of firearms.
Spokesperson for the Command, Timfon John, confirmed this in a statement saying the operatives acting on intelligence gatherings, arrested the suspect on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, at about 10:15 a.m..
John said an AK-47 rifle and two empty magazines were recovered.
According to him, “Detectives carried out the operation without any incident and arrested the suspect on the spot,” John said.
“He is now in police custody as investigations continue to trace the source of the firearm, uncover his motives, and apprehend any accomplices for prosecution.”
The police spokesperson reiterated the command’s resolve to clamp down on illegal arms proliferation and urged members of the public in possession of unlawful weapons to surrender them voluntarily or face the full weight of the law.
John also commended the public for providing crucial intelligence, urging continued cooperation with security agencies to ensure safety in the state.
This arrest comes amid a broader effort by law enforcement to curb illegal arms circulation and violent crime in Akwa Ibom communities
