CITIZENS COMPASS— Ahead of the 2027 presidential election, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has alleged that the Nigerian government is targeting opposition parties and this is restricting his political move so far.
Obi disclosed this in a podcast, With Chude, hosted by a media personality Chude Jideonwo.
Excerpts from the conversation were on Wednesday, shared on X formerly known as Twitter.
When asked whether he could be prevented from contesting the 2027 presidential election, Obi said his concerns went beyond his candidacy.
Not even a candidate. I might not even be alive. I’m telling you,” Obi said.
Every single thing I do for a living, this government is frustrating. Deliberately so. Everything. So, there is even a possibility that, if they have the opportunity, I will not be alive.
“It’s not an accusation. I know. I get frustrated everyday. Because you do things that you think would be normal—it is not normal anymore.
They won’t come directly and say, ‘Oh, we’re doing this,’ but you can see their hand in virtually everything.
Responding to whether he believed he was being personally targeted, Obi said he was not the only opposition figure facing such treatment.
They are attacking everybody who is in opposition personally. I am being attacked personally. Everything. Even to provide me with necessary things that I should have been entitled to, not at all,” he said.
Obi also cited an alleged incident at an airport, where he claimed his vehicle was locked by officials despite other vehicles being parked in the same location.
“I had a case recently at the airport, where people who work in the airport came and locked my car. And I said, ‘It’s me.’ The person in charge said he doesn’t care.
But I said, ‘Look at the cars of other people.’ And you could see them talking to each other, as if, ‘Who is this one?’” he recounted.
He further alleged that some individuals had become reluctant to publicly associate with him because of fears that they could also become targets.
“And I see people I know at the airport, they will not greet me because they are afraid that if they greet me…” Obi said.
The NDC presidential hopeful also claimed that some supporters had asked him not to attend important personal events because of concerns about possible consequences.
“And I have people send me invitations and say, ‘My son, my daughter is at the wedding, but please don’t come,’” he said.
Obi did not present evidence to support the allegations during the interview. The Federal Government had not issued a response to the claims at the time of filing this report.
