CITIZENS COMPASS— Ahead of the 2027 general election, former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, on Tuesday, joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
Lawal formally joined NDC on Tuesday after meeting with its National Leader, Senator Seriake Dickson, in Abuja.
The former SGF had resigned from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) on June 1, 2026.
He cited the reason for his resignation being the emergence of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as the party’s presidential candidate.
Lawal had previously expressed support for a possible Peter Obi-Rabiu Kwankwaso ticket and also backed Obi during the 2023 presidential election when he contested on the platform of the Labour Party.
Speaking after he was accepted into the NDC, Lawal gave his decision to join the party this, “Anybody in Nigeria who has the interest of our country at heart and sympathy for the suffering that is ongoing in our country, along with insecurity, hunger, ignorance and disease, will have no choice but to join a party that represents the future and have Peter and Kwankwaso as their candidates,” Lawal said.
He added that he was looking forward to working with the NDC towards what he described as the “noble objective” of having Obi as president and Kwankwaso as vice president.
“So, by the grace of God, we look forward to May 29, 2027, to celebrate the feat properly for the good of the country, and future generations yet unborn,” the former SGF said.
