CITIZENS COMPASS— Suspected bandits have reportedly placed a ₦1 billion ransom on eight worshippers including a pastor’s wife in the Evangelical Church of West Africa (ECWA), Kwara State.
The church activities were disrupted on Sunday following the invasion of some gunmen who whisked the victims away.
The church was located in Omugo, Ifelodun Local Government Area of the State.
They were said to have fired gunshots to disperse the congregation.
Speaking to News Central TV, the church’s pastor-in-charge, Toba Omole, whose wife is among those abducted, confirmed that eight people remain in captivity.
He said the kidnappers made contact on Tuesday morning and allowed the victims to speak briefly.
“This morning, to the glory of God, we heard from our people who were abducted about three days ago. We heard their voices, and I heard my wife’s voice and other members; the men and women that were kidnapped together,” Omole said.
“About eight of them are still there. And right away, the kidnappers made their demand. They requested N1 billion from us in order to secure their release.”
The cleric described the demand as far beyond what the community can afford and appealed for help.
“This is beyond our power. We are sincerely in need of your help and assistance. Any negotiations you can make, any efforts you can make to assist us, please kindly do so for us,” he said.
While acknowledging efforts by security agencies, Omole stressed that more needs to be done to secure the area and ensure the safe return of the victims.
“There is still work to do because eight people ; our mothers, fathers, and wives are still in captivity. My wife is there,” he added.
He also appreciated the intervention of soldiers who visited the community after the attack and provided temporary security presence overnight.
