CITIZENS COMPASS—The Council Chairman of Igbogbo-Baiyeku Local Council Development Area (IBLCDA), Ikorodu Division, Lagos State, Omo’ba Hammed Olalekan Aroyewun (HOA), has called for the active participation of residents in the monthly sanitation exercise across the LCDA.
Citizens Compass reported that the sanitation exercise takes place every last Saturday of the month in all local governments and their Council Development Areas in Lagos.
Over the weekend, Aroyewun led his team to monitor the exercise across Wards C1 and C2 of the Council where he enjoined residents not to handle the sanitation exercise with kid gloves.
The Chairman emphasised that environmental sanitation must remain a collective responsibility.
According to him: “Environmental sanitation is not merely a government programme; it is a civic obligation that every resident must embrace. A clean environment is the foundation of a healthy, safe, and prosperous community. Today’s impressive turnout demonstrates that our people understand the importance of protecting and preserving their surroundings,” he said.
The exercise saw residents actively participating in the clean-up exercise aimed at promoting environmental sustainability, public health, and civic responsibility.
The exercise, which took place between 6:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m., witnessed widespread participation across all five wards of the LCDA, with residents clearing drains, sweeping streets, desilting gutters, and properly disposing of waste in designated collection points.
Among the entourage were the Leader of the House, Hon. Basirat Adetutu Banjoko; the Deputy Leader, Hon. Hakeem Solawon; members of the Executive Cabinet, councillors, environmental officers, and other stakeholders who fanned out across communities to mobilise residents and ensure full compliance.
The Council’s Department of Environmental Services and Waste Management demonstrated strong operational readiness throughout the exercise, deploying personnel, sanitation tools, and waste evacuation trucks to strategic locations across the LCDA to ensure the prompt collection and disposal of refuse generated during the exercise.
The Supervisor for Environment and Waste Management, Hon. Dauda Oshinlaja, who supervised field operations, assured residents that the administration’s commitment to environmental cleanliness extends far beyond the monthly exercise.
“Today’s sanitation exercise is only one part of our broader environmental agenda. Our waste evacuation teams will continue routine operations across the LCDA, and any refuse observed on our streets after today will be promptly removed. We are committed to sustaining a cleaner and healthier environment for all residents,”_ he stated.
In Ward C3, Hon. Saidat Adeoba Odeyemi led residents through a coordinated clean-up exercise across Baiyeku, Oreta, Offin, and adjoining communities. Working alongside community leaders and residents, she mobilised households to clear drainages, sweep access roads, and ensure proper waste disposal. Other cabinet members also participated actively in community sensitisation efforts within the ward.
Ward C4 equally recorded commendable compliance, with residents enthusiastically participating in the exercise. The Vice Chairman, Barr. Ade Ayeni, alongside Hon. Yusuf Bello and environmental officers coordinated activities across the ward, ensuring that waste generated during the exercise was properly bagged and evacuated.
In Ward C5, residents responded positively to the sanitation directive, demonstrating the same level of civic responsibility witnessed across the LCDA.
The widespread participation further reflected the growing culture of environmental consciousness being promoted under the present administration.
The Lagos State Monthly Environmental Sanitation Exercise, reintroduced by the administration of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, remains a critical public health and environmental management initiative. Public health experts continue to identify regular community sanitation exercises as an effective strategy for preventing disease outbreaks, reducing environmental pollution, mitigating flooding caused by blocked drainage channels, and fostering a stronger sense of community ownership.
For Igbogbo/Baiyeku LCDA, the consistent participation of residents and the effective coordination of sanitation activities have continued to position the council as one of the local governments actively supporting the State’s environmental sustainability objectives.
The Executive Chairman expressed appreciation to residents for their commitment to the exercise, particularly as it coincided with the Eid-el-Kabir festive period and public holiday activities.
He also commended the Department of Environmental Services and Waste Management, community leaders, environmental officers, and all stakeholders whose efforts contributed to the success of the exercise.
As the administration continues to pursue its vision of building cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable communities, residents are encouraged to maintain proper sanitation practices, avoid indiscriminate waste disposal, and support ongoing environmental initiatives across the LCDA.
Together, we can build an Igbogbo/Baiyeku that is cleaner, healthier, safer, and more prosperous for all.
