Fire razes plank market in Lagos 

 

CITIZENS COMPASS —Planks and building materials worth Millions of Naira were destoyed overnight, when fire razed the popular Ladipo Pako Market on Iganmu Road, Orile, Lagos State.

However, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) and sister agencies were at hand to douse the raging overnight inferno. 

The cause of the inferno which started from from one of the structures could not be ascertained but tje raging fire was said to have consumed items like planks, building materials and other valuable items. 

The inferno was said to be noticed at about 11.30p.m on Tuesday after the traders have all retired from the day’s business. 

It was said to have spread rapidly and spread to some of the structures in the area. 

The Director of the Fire service, Adeseye Margaret and LASEMA Permanent Secretary, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu confirmed the incident to Citizens Compass. 

According to Adeseye, “The Fire which was reported 15 minutes into the new month summoned a concerted efforts of the Fire crews from Sari Iganmu, Ajegunle, Ilupeju and Bolade Stations of the Agency with complimentary of the Federal Fire Service and LASEMA with security back up of the Nigerian Police Force.

“The sawmill market that also trade in building materials as the Fire rapidly spread because of the combustible materials involved that include inflammatory wood polish and given the dryness of the season but however met the competency of the Firefighters.

“The cause of the Fire cannot be immediately ascertain but will be revealed after the mop up of the exercise that is at dampening down stage along with enumeration of the property and cost.

” No casualty has been recorded in this operation as further detail will subsequently made known.

In his situation report, Osanyintolu said,” The Agency,  Lagos State Fire and Federal Fire services worked through the night on combating the inferno. 

“After the flames were extinguished and the initial damping down  concluded, the Agency’s Excavator was deployed.

A joint decision by the  emergency stakeholders and the plank market exco about operating procedures was reached. The market owners were deeply satisfied with the first phase 

“The second phase of operation with Excavator will commence once temperatures have cooled for the safety of the Equipment and responders.

The whole scene area is calm and normalcy has been restored.
