Hoodlums disrupt political rally, attack Labour Party candidate in Surulere

 

CITIZENS COMPASS– FEW hours to the Gubernatorial and House of Assembly (HoA) elections in Nigeria, some suspected hoodlums have attacked a Labour Party candidate, Olumide Oworu in Surulere area, on Thursday, March 16, 2023.

28 years old Olumide Oworu is contesting for the state House of Assembly ticket against Desmond Eliot an incumbent candidate under the umbrella of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Desmond Elliot is a member, Lagos State House of Assembly since April 2015 till date.

It was gathered that Owuru had scheduled a rally against Thursday, in Surulere with the take off point at Bode Thomas T-Junction (Traffic Light) to pass through the wards in constituency 1 (Akinhanmi/Cole, Adeniran/Ogunsanya, Iponri Housing Estate/Eric Moore, Igbaja/Stadium, Shitta/Ogunlana Drive, Yaba/Ojuelegba).

However, the rally was disrupted midway as the campaign team was attacked.

Citizens Compass reports that some people were injured as the attackers vandalised property and dispossessed some people.

People were said to have scampered for safety while the attack lasted.

The suspected hoodlums were said to have attacked anybody at sight and broke into shops.

A video of the attack which went viral on Thursday afternoon captured a woman lamenting how the hooflums reportedly attacked their venue as they were about to start campaigning.

She said the hoodlums carted away personal effects like bags, cell phones and cash to mention but a few.

The woman added that the hoodlums freely used dangerous weapons during the attack.

In another video, a lady could be heard explaining that the campaign vehicle was reportedly smashed by thugs.

Owuru has since taken to his Twitter handle to narrate what transpired saying, “My team and I were attacked on Tuesday as we attempted to campaign at Iponri, Surulere. A member of my team was injured, but we are thankful the incident didn’t escalate past the level it was. The case has been reported at the Iponri police station.

“am not deterred by the incident. Instead I am more committed to seeing this through. We will pass through the wards in constituency 1 (Akinhanmi/Cole, Adeniran/Ogunsanya, Iponri Housing Estate/Eric Moore, Igbaja/Stadium, Shitta/Ogunlana Drive, Yaba/Ojuelegba). See you outside!
