CITIZENS COMPASS— No fewer than 200 senior citizens on Friday, smiled home with goodies as the council chairman of Igbogbo/Baiyeku Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Ikorodu Division in Lagos State, Omo’ba Hammed Olalekan Aroyewun, created time out of his busy schedule to celebrate them.
The 200 were given food items and cash as Aroyewun popularly known as HOA, kick-started the council’s Senior Citizens’ Appreciation Day in high spirit.
The programme which was held at the Multi purpose hall of the council hosted the elderly residents and retirees for their contributions to community development as Aroyewun assured them of his administration’s continued commitment to their welfare.
Addressing the beneficiaries, the Chairman described senior citizens as invaluable members of society whose sacrifices, experience and wisdom had helped to shape the community.
He commended them for their years of dedicated service, noting that the progress recorded across Igbogbo/Baiyeku was built, in part, on the foundations laid by previous generations.
Aroyewun expressed delight at the enthusiasm and joy displayed by the beneficiaries, describing the programme as a modest gesture of gratitude to those who had contributed immensely to society.
He attributed the initiative to the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, noting that the administration’s policies continued to inspire interventions aimed at improving the welfare of Nigerians.
The Chairman also appreciated the senior citizens for their longstanding support, describing them as an important and politically active segment of the community.
Ahead of the 2027 general elections, he urged them to sustain their political participation and mobilise support for candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
He further assured residents that his administration would continue to introduce programmes and initiatives designed to improve living conditions and extend the benefits of governance to different segments of the population.
Earlier, the Head of the Department of Agriculture, Mrs. Otun Anuoluwapo, explained that the programme was conceived to recognise and appreciate elderly residents for their enduring contributions to the growth and development of Igbogbo/Baiyeku.
Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Mrs. Oluwatoyin Fayoyiwa, a retiree, expressed appreciation to the Chairman for the initiative.
Fayoyiwa, who said she had lived in the community for 40 years, described the programme as unprecedented in her experience and commended the administration for recognising and celebrating senior citizens.
She thanked the Chairman and his team for the gesture, noting that the recognition meant a great deal to the beneficiaries.
The event was attended by members of the council’s management team, Supervisors, Special Advisers, retirees and senior citizens from different communities within the LCDA.
The programme concluded with the formal recognition of the elderly residents and the distribution of palliatives to beneficiaries.
The initiative forms part of the Aroyewun administration’s efforts to promote inclusive governance, recognise the contributions of older residents and strengthen community welfare across Igbogbo/Baiyeku LCDA.
