Lagos bans Okada in Surulere, Etiosa, others

THE Lagos State government, on Wednesday, announced a “total ban” on commercial motorcycles, popularly called Okada,  in six Local Government Areas in the state.

The six local governments are Ikeja, Surulere, Eti-Osa, Lagos Mainland, Lagos Island, and Apapa.

Babajide Sanwo-Olu, governor of Lagos, announced the directive while briefing the state’s security agents on Wednesday.

He said, “The whole of Ikeja, Surulere, Eti-Osa, Lagos Mainland, Lagos Island, and Apapa local governments have been placed on a total ban effective from the first of June. This is the first phase of banning that we are going to be embarking on, so that others should know… They should find something else to do.”

Similarlly, Lagos State Taskforce said it has impounded 115 motorcycles for flouting traffic rules in Lekki.

Chairman of the Agency, CSP Shola Jejeloye said the exercise will take place across the state.

This is just as Lekki Phase 1 Residents Association LERA, has cried out over the activities of commercial motorcyclists in the area saying this is causing more harm than good to residents.

The residents who spoke through Yomi Idowu, the chairman of the residents association on Wednesday, called on Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu to save the community from the menace by sustaining the ongoing clamping down of commercial motorcycle operators in the area.

These follow the recent gruesome murder of a sound engineer, David Imoh by some commercial motorcyclists in Lekki.
