Protests hit Oyo over salary deductions

CITIZENS COMPASS – Scores of government workers and retirees in Oyo State on Monday staged a peaceful protest to demand an upward review of their salary.

The protesters requested the payment of the deductions from their salary, stating that their take-home pay can no longer take them home.

They also called on Governor ‘Seyi’s Makinde-administration to effect an upward review of allowances for retirees.

The workers who converged at the State Secretariat as early as 8am were vehement in demanding to see the governor personally attend to them.

They blocked the major entrance into the secretariat as they asked for payment of gratuities to retirees who have stagnated since 2021.

Among others, the protestants also demanded the release of their Letters of Promotion for the Years 2021 and 2022, respectively.

They insisted that they want Governor Makinde to personally address them over issues affecting workers in the state.

The protesting workers and pensioners are members of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP), Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) and their affiliates.

The protesting workers are still waiting for government officials to address them at the time of filling this report.
