Six injured in Abuja building collapse
CITIZENS COMPASS— Six persons were injured on weekend, following the collapse of a two-storey building in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.
The building under construction collapsed in the Jikwoyi area at about 11 a.m while workers were present on-site.
In a statement, Nkechi Isa, head of public affairs at the FCT Emergency Management Department (FEMD), said rescue operations were ongoing.
According to FEMD, 17 workers were on the upper floor of the building when the incident occurred.
“Rescue efforts are ongoing to ensure no person is trapped in the rubble of a collapsed two-storey building in Jikwoyi, Abuja Municipal Area Council of the FCT,” the statement reads.
“FEMD search and rescue team says that 17 workers were on the upper floor of the building when it collapsed, injuring five workers and trapping a lone male who was at the ground level of the building.”
FEMD added that the injured workers, along with those rescued, were taken to the Sisters of Nativity Hospital in Jikwoyi, where they are reportedly responding to treatment.
Emergency responders at the scene include personnel from the FCT Emergency Management Department, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the Department of Development Control, the Engineering Department of the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), the Federal Fire Service (FFS), and the FCT Police Command.
The agency noted that excavation at the site is “still ongoing until ground zero to ensure that no person is trapped in the rubble.”
In a separate development, a fire outbreak affected part of a car sales and service centre along the Kubwa Expressway in Bwari Area Council.
The statement said the fire broke out around noon on Friday at the Earloha Chery Centre located at Arab Junction in Kubwa.
Monday Adie, head of FEMD’s search and rescue team, stated that “no lives were lost in the fire incident.”
No life was lost.
