…Second attack in two months

CITIZENS COMPASS— Suspected cultists on Sunday struck in the Baiyeku area of Igbogbo/Baiyeku Local Council Development Area (IBLCDA) in Ikorodu, Lagos State, leaving a yet-to-be-ascertained number of people dead.

The incident occurred in the Odudu area.

An unconfirmed source said four people were feared dead during the attack, which occurred in the late hours of Sunday.

One of the victims was said to be a commercial motorcyclist.

The Sunday strike occurred in less than 24 hours after the council chairman, Omo’ba Hammed Olalekan Aroyewun (HOA), visited the community to extend free medical care to about 415 residents.

Citizens Compass reports that the attack was the second in the community within a space of seven weeks as suspected cultists reportedly killed one and injured another on Saturday, August 29, 2026.

The August attack left a petty trader, identified as Ebuka, seriously injured, apart from one death that was recorded the same day.

Eyewitness accounts said that the day started on a good note until late hours, when the sounds of gunshots were heard, and people scampered for safety, but the commercial motorcyclist ended up as a victim and was rushed to a nearby hospital, but was rejected by the hospital authorities.

He was said to have given up the ghost some minutes later.

Another victim of the attack was a young man who sustained gunshot injuries but ran as far as he could to escape further attacks. However, his assailants chased, overpowered, and stabbed him several times until he passed out.

A young woman was later spotted who identified herself as his widow, shouting, “He is my husband, he is my husband…”

Although both the sitting council chairman of IBLCDA, Omo’ba Hammed Olalekan Aroyewun (HOA), and his predecessor, Dr Olusesan Mayokun Daini, also known as Builder Daini, have prioritised the security of lives and property in the area, the level of insecurity in Ikorodu, particularly Igbogbo/Baiyeku, seems to have gone beyond the reach of local government and requires the urgent attention of both the state and federal government.

Although the past administration of IBLCDA went the extra mile of establishing a Joint Taskforce (JTF) with some competent hands on board under the leadership of Mr Dare Igbasan, the challenges confronting this underfunded local security team are enormous.

At press time, men of the Nigeria Police Force, Ikorodu Division, were seen patrolling the area.

In a recent chat with Citizens Compass, Omo’ba Aroyewun assured that adequate measures would be applied, saying, “We are on top of the security. With relevant security agencies, our intelligence gathering is positive.”

Now that the 2027 general elections are approaching, residents of this community have made a passionate appeal to the government at all levels to urgently address the issue of insecurity in the area.
