Tricycle rider, passenger crushed to death in Lagos

CITIZENS COMPASS– A commercial tricyclist and female passenger were crushed to death on Tuesday, following an accident which occurred at Ikotun area of Lagos State.

Operatives of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) however rescued four victims during the incident involving a containerised truck and three tricycles.

According to LASTMA Spokesperson, Adebayo Taofiq, the accident which occurred at about 12:30 pm involved a fully loaded containerised truck JJJ 125 and four tricycles with number plates LSD 83 QM, AKD 690 QK and AKL 87 QF

He said the rider of one of the tricycles with one passenger on board lost their lives on the spot.

The four rescued victims by LASTMA personnel were two pregnant women and two children.

The Spokesperson said LASTMA personnel immediately handed over the rescued victims to Policemen from Ikotun Police Station who took them to General Hospital for treatment.

Cause of accident

“A preliminary investigation revealed that the fully loaded containerised truck, JJJ 125, suffered brake failure and crushed three tricycles by a valley around synagogue inward Ikotun.

“The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) immediately evacuated the tanker with the crushed tricycles to Ikotun Police Station.” He said.

Among other emergency responders at the scene were men of the Nigeria Police Force from Ikotun Police Station were at the scene of the accident.

“The General Manager of LASTMA Mr Bolaji Oreagba however warned tanker owners and drivers to always ensure that their trucks are properly checked and in good conditions before embarking on any journey.”

The Ikotun accident occurred barely 48 hours after a containerised truck crushed nine passengers to death at Ojuelegba.
