CITIZENS COMPASS— The High Court of Nigeria sitting in Gwarzo, Kano State, has sentenced an 85-year-old man, Malam Isah Abdullahi, to 14 years imprisonment for an offence bothering on rape.
Abdullahi was prosecuted before High Court No. 24.
The Kano State Ministry of Justice secured the conviction.
Spokesman for the ministry, Najib Lawan Dambazau, in a statement, stated that the offence was committed on November 30, 2024, in Sauna, Gabasawa Local Government Area, adding that the prosecution presented sufficient evidence to establish the case beyond a reasonable doubt.
The trial judge, Justice Aisha Mahmud, while delivering judgment, found the defendant guilty and sentenced him to 14 years in prison, emphasising that the court had taken into account a plea for leniency presented by the defence counsel before pronouncing the sentence.
The case was prosecuted by the Solicitor-General and Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Justice, Salisu Muhammad Tahir, alongside members of his team.
The Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Abdulkarim Kabiru Maude, commended the prosecution team for securing the conviction, describing it as a demonstration of the ministry’s commitment to justice.
The ministry reiterated its resolve to protect the rights and dignity of victims while ensuring that perpetrators of sexual offences and other forms of violence are held accountable.
