CITIZENS COMPASS—As students resumed for a new academic session on Monday, the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Lagos State, Mr. Jamiu Tolani Alli-Balogun, has gifted some writing materials and vocational gadgets to some pupils and students in the State.

He gifted the items when he left some Management staff to monitor compliance.

The Basic and Secondary schools kicked off the 2025/2026 academic session with impressive attendance.

The Commissioner led the Management Staff of the Ministry to monitor compliance with the State’s directive on resumption across the State on Monday, September 15, 2025.

The monitoring exercise carried out simultaneously across various schools also assessed the schools’ readiness for the new academic session.

Speaking to media men after the tour, the Commissioner commended students and parents’ enthusiasm and readiness for the new session. The commendable turnout of both teachers and students he noted was an indication that they are in sync with the policies and programmes of the government in the education sector.

The Commissioner advised students to be mentally prepared for learning, be obedient, complete assignments on time, and maintain regular attendance to fully engage in teaching-learning activities.

During his visit to Dolphin Senior and Junior High School and Saint Paul’s Angelica Nursery and Primary School, both on Lagos Island, the Commissioner announced that the upcoming term would run for 13 weeks, from September 15 to December 12, 2025. He also mentioned that a Universal Timetable would be developed and distributed to all schools soon.

He reaffirmed the State’s commitment to policies that boost teaching quality and student’s performance in internal and external examinations. He advised teachers to adapt to and cover the curriculum within the stipulated period.

Weighing in on the newly adopted Computer-Based Test (CBT) format for the West African Schools Certificate Examination, Alli-Balogun encouraged teachers to prioritize computer literacy for students, emphasizing that proficiency in computer use is key to improving their speed and efficiency.

He urged teachers to be diligent, proactive, and committed to their duties, saying, “Let’s work together to make this academic session remarkable, filled with discovery, growth, and achievement. I wish you all a successful and fulfilling session!”

The Commissioner, who distributed writing materials to students and pupils in the visited schools, also gifted Dolphin Senior High School, Lagos Island, a standard oven/gas cooker and a sewing machine to support Home Economics and skills acquisition programmes.

Addressing teachers’ challenges, he encouraged creativity and improvisation, adding that principals should manage their school funds judiciously and complement the State Government’s efforts where necessary.

The schools visited for compliance checks included Dolphin Senior and Junior High School, Saint Paul’s Anglican Nursery and Primary School, Millennium Grammar School, and several others across various locations.
