CITIZENS COMPASS—- The Classic Car Club of Nigeria is marking a decade of passion, community and motoring heritage with Nostalgic Lagos, a 10th anniversary celebration taking place on 1 October 2026 at Lagos Polo Club.
The anniversary will bring together classic car collectors, automotive enthusiasts, Club members, families, friends and guests. They will celebrate the automobile and also the memories and stories that connect Lagos across generations.
The Club began in 2016 as a modest car show and has grown into a network of more than 120 members. It has built its reputation on signature events such as its Independence Day classic car drives and Father’s Day car shows, which draw enthusiasts and the general public alike. Informal meet-ups known as “Classic Cars and Coffee” have widened its reach. They are designed to deepen engagement and build fellowship among people who share a love of vintage machines. At one past Independence Day show and drive, the parking lot filled with classic cars from the 1970s to the 1990s, and about 150 car lovers came to see them and swap stories.
Over the past ten years, the Club has given people who value classic automobiles a community, along with the history, craftsmanship and experiences that go with them. Nostalgic Lagos builds on that heritage by placing the automobile within a broader Lagos story. Cars have always been more than machines. They have carried families. They have marked milestones. They have accompanied road trips and celebrations, and they have walked alongside those who built the structures, infrastructure, empires and systems that power Lagos State.
Many of the vehicles at the heart of classic motoring in Nigeria are tied to the country’s own industrial story. Peugeot Automobile Nigeria was established in Kaduna to assemble Peugeot passenger cars locally. Its plant was commissioned in 1973, though production only began in March 1975. For years the Peugeot 404 and 504 were a common sight on Nigerian roads, driven by civil servants, military officers, taxi operators and families. The 504 in particular became a symbol of reliability and prestige. Progenitor-member Mr. Dapo Otunla has described the 404 as historically significant for its role in Nigeria’s early automobile assembly industry. He has also noted that models such as the Volkswagen Beetle are finding new admirers among younger people. For many Nigerian families, the back seat of one of these cars holds a piece of their own history.
Keeping such cars on the road is no small task. Sourcing parts is one of the biggest challenges, especially for rare models, which may have to be sourced from the United States or Europe. Humidity and poor road conditions accelerate wear, and rust remains a constant threat to chassis and body panels.
Part of the Club’s purpose has been to help owners meet these challenges by sharing knowledge, contacts and encouragement. The Club has also called for government and private sector support to develop classic car exhibitions into a viable tourism and cultural platform across Nigeria and the wider West African sub-region.
The date of the celebration is significant. 1 October is Nigeria’s Independence Day, and 2026 marks the country’s 66th anniversary. It has long been a fixture on the Club’s calendar, and holding the tenth anniversary on this day links a decade of classic motoring to a moment of national reflection and pride.
Nostalgic Lagos will feature classic automobiles, collectors, members, special guests and experiences designed to bring the stories of the past decade to life.
As the Club celebrates its tenth year, the anniversary is also a chance to reflect on the community that has grown around it and to consider what the next decade may hold. That includes welcoming new members, preserving rare vehicles, passing knowledge to a new generation of enthusiasts and strengthening the place of classic motoring in Nigeria’s cultural life.
At the centre of the celebration is a simple idea: ten years is more than a number. It is a collection of stories, and Nostalgic Lagos will bring them together.
