FG orders universities to reopen

CITIZENS COMPASS– THE Federal Government of Nigeria, has directed vice-chancellors to re-open universities and resume academic activities immediately.

This comes barely seven months after universities were shut down following the strike action embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU.

The directive was issued through the National Universities Commission in a letter signed by the Director, Finance and Accounts of the NUC, Sam Onazi, on behalf of the Executive Secretary of the commission, Professor Abubakar Rasheed.

The letter was addressed to all vice-chancellors; Pro-Chancellors and chairmen of governing councils of federal universities.

It reads in part:

  1. Ensure that ASUU members immediately resume/commence lectures; Restore the daily activities and routines of the various University campuses”

the letter partly reads.

Citizens Compass– reports that the universities were shut indefinitely in February after ASUU embarked on a strike over the failure of the Federal Government to allegedly honour agreements reached with the union in the past.

However, the Federal Government had recently taken the issue to the courts and the National Industrial Court last Wednesday ordered ASUU to call off the strike.’
