Chaos as Trump, wife escape shooting
CITIZENS COMPASS—It was a narrow escape for President Donald Trump of the United States of America (USA), his wife and many other attendees at a dinner party following unexpected firing of gunshots at the event.
The incident occurred on Saturday night during the dinner organised by the White House Correspondent Chapel in Washington Hilton.
The sounds of gunshots were heard from nowhere as people scampered for safety.
Videos from the scene went viral overnight.
It was learnt that an armed man stormed the lobby of the venue where Donald Trump, his wife Melania, and top members of his administration were gathered.
The suspect, reportedly armed with guns and knives, attempted to breach security and move toward the main ballroom where hundreds of guests, including senior government officials, journalists, and celebrities, were seated.
Eyewitnesses described a terrifying scene as guests scrambled for safety, diving under tables amid reports of gunshots echoing outside the ballroom. The swift intervention of the Secret Service prevented what could have escalated into a major tragedy, as agents quickly subdued the suspect and took him into custody.
Authorities later identified the suspect as Cole Tomas Allen, 31, from Torrance, California. According to law enforcement officials, the attacker appeared to be acting alone, with no immediate indication of a wider conspiracy. Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser reassured the public that there was no ongoing threat, stating that officials had “no reason” to believe others were involved.
Despite the proximity of the threat, President Trump and the First Lady were uninjured. They were swiftly escorted out of the venue by security personnel. In the confusion, the president reportedly stumbled briefly but was quickly helped to his feet by agents.
Speaking at the White House shortly after the incident, Trump described the attacker as a “sick person” and suggested that his prominence may have made him a target.
“When you’re impactful, they go after you. When you’re not impactful, they leave you alone,” he said, adding that preliminary assessments pointed to a lone-wolf attack.
The incident marked yet another security scare involving the president, coming as the United States remains on heightened alert amid ongoing tensions with Iran. It is the third such threat in close proximity to Trump since 2024, raising fresh concerns about the evolving nature of security risks facing top political figures.
One law enforcement officer was reportedly shot during the incident but survived thanks to a bullet-resistant vest. Officials confirmed the officer is expected to recover.
Investigators from the FBI, led by Director Kash Patel, have since launched a full probe into the attack. Authorities are examining weapons recovered at the scene, including a long gun, and are reviewing shell casings while interviewing witnesses who attended the dinner.
Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche indicated that charges against the suspect would be filed promptly, noting that the gravity of the incident would likely dictate the severity of the charges.
Inside the banquet hall, what had begun as a formal evening quickly descended into confusion. Guests, who had been dining and awaiting presidential remarks, initially mistook the noise for a minor disturbance before realizing the seriousness of the situation. Audible gasps filled the room as Secret Service agents moved swiftly, ordering attendees to take cover.
At one point, chants of “God Bless America” broke out as Trump was escorted away from the stage, underscoring the tension and uncertainty gripping the gathering.
The event, which traditionally serves as a rare moment of interaction between political leaders and the press, was ultimately scrapped for the night. Organisers later confirmed that it would be rescheduled.
The dinner had been expected to spotlight Trump’s complex relationship with the media, especially given his administration’s ongoing disputes with major news organisations. Instead, it became the latest reminder of the security challenges surrounding public appearances by world leaders.
Security around the hotel was significantly tightened following the incident, with National Guard personnel deployed and helicopters seen circling overhead as authorities secured the area.
While normalcy has since been restored, the attack has reignited debate about the adequacy of security arrangements at high-profile events, particularly those held in venues that remain partially accessible to the public.
As investigations continue, officials are urging anyone with information about the suspect or the events leading up to the attack to come forward, as authorities work to piece together the full circumstances behind the alarming breach.
