Explosion hits Army barracks in Ogun

 

 

CITIZENS COMPASS—The Nigerian Army on Friday, confirmed an explosion which occurred at the Sappers Barracks in Ilese, Ijebu Ode, Ogun State.

The incident which occurred yesterday, was first noticed at a mini store within the barracks.

Eye witnesses’ accounts said it was caused by the detonation of bombs stored in the military armory, according to preliminary reports.

Confirming the explosion in a statement, the Nigerian Army said it was a minor explosion which triggered a fire outbreak.

Lieutenant Colonel Appolonia Anele, the Acting Director, Army Public Relations in the statement

said the incident occurred within a storage building of the 42 Engineers Brigade Counter Improvised Explosive Device Squadron.

The military said the “swift intervention by troops and the Ijebu-Ode Fire Service ensured that the fire was quickly contained.”

“No lives were lost, and no injuries were sustained.”

The Nigerian Army said it has commenced a thorough investigation to ascertain the exact cause of the incident and to prevent a recurrence.

“The Nigerian Army remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of all its personnel as well as the members of neighbouring communities,” Anele added.

“Residents of Ilese and adjoining communities have been urged to remain calm and go about their normal activities.

“A detailed assessment is currently underway to determine the extent of material loss.

“The incident has been contained, and the Nigerian Army is working to prevent any future occurrences.”
