Fayemi in EFCC custody over alleged N4b fraud

CITIZENS COMPASS – OPERATIVES of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) are currently quizzing a former governor of Ekiti State, Kayode Fayemi, over the misappropriation of funds to the tune of N4 billion.

Fayemi, also a former Minister of Mines and Steel Development during President Muhammadu Buhari’s first term, was still undergoing interrogation at about 4:15pm on Thursday, June 1, 2023 at Ilorin zonal command of the EFCC.

A crack detective of the commission at the EFCC headquarters said the former governor honoured the invitation earlier extended to him.

“He’s only in our Ilorin zonal office basically to answer some questions that bordered on alleged fraud of N4 billion belonging to Ekiti State. He would likely be released tonight or tomorrow morning after explanations,” the detective said.

The spokesman of the anti-graft, Wilson Uwujaren, also confirmed Fayemi’s presence at the commission’s custody to our correspondent but declined further comment.

“Yes, it is true. He’s with us. He’s in Ilorin zonal office answering questions but I won’t make further comments on that,” Uwujaren told Daily Trust.

There is no indication that the invitation and subsequent quizzing were connected to the assumption of Tinubu as president.

Fayemi was a serious contender for the presidential ticket of the All Progressives Congress, APC and was seen as the arrowhead of the governors but his permutation was overwhelmed in the last minute intrigues as Tinubu undercut him using some fellow governors among others.

He surprised many of his supporters when after months of pulling at the Tinubu Campaign he easily capitulated.

It was learnt that Fayemi became governor of Ekiti State in 2010 after he won his election petition at the tribunal against the then-incumbent governor of the state, Segun Oni having contested the 2007 election on the platform of the then Action Congress of Nigeria.

There is no indication as to when Fayemi would be released from the custody of the EFCC.
