Fire guts Lagos building, destroys goods

...how shanties, illegal structures prevent access 

 

CITIZENS COMPASS– Clothes and leather works worth Millions of Naira were destroyed on Thursday, as fire guts a five-storey building in Gbajumo area of Lagos Island.

The fire was said to have erupted from one of the shops at about 1am and raged till day break before it was combated.

Eye witnesses’ account said fire fighters and other emergency operative on arrival in the area could not easily accessed the scene fie to illegal structures and shanties blocking the access road

However, the obstruction was manually removed to pave way for the fire fighters

It was learnt that while emergency operation was ongoing fire erupted from nowhere and this extended the operation till about 5pm.

The Coordinator, Lagos State Territorial District, National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Ibrahim Farinloye, Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr Oluwafemi Oke-Osanyintolu and Director, Lagos Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye confirmed the incident to Citizens Compass.

Farinloye said, “The fire started at about 0045 hours and the concerted efforts of fire men from the Federal and State put out the fire at about 0300..

However, while dampening was ongoing, the fire started again at about 0600 hours but the fire has been brought under total control.

“The fire has been contained without spreading to other building.”

They said there was no injury or loss of life

“No injury or death has been noticed

“Accessibility to the source of fire was very difficult but it is confined to the source.

“There was demolition of shanties to create access road.

“Manual demolition of obstructive structures/buildings impeding access of fire tenders are ongoing.

“UBA AND LRU Fire trucks have joined the operations.

“There was coordination and public information dissemination to the stakeholders and the public being conducted by the Operations Head of Lagos State fire Service.

“Assessment of the building by joint agency took place.”
