Former Deputy Governor kills self, wife

CITIZENS COMPASS— Tragedy struck in the United States when a former Deputy Governor, Justin Fairfax, was found dead alongside his wife, Dr. Cerina Fairfax, in their home.

Both were reportedly found dead in Annandale, a suburb of Washington, D.C.

Investigators said that Justin Fairfax shot his wife multiple times before turning the gun on himself at their Annandale home. Both of the couple’s teenage children were at home at the time.

Police said the incident occurred after the couple’s teenage son called emergency services shortly after midnight. Officers later arrived at the house and discovered both of them.

Authorities explained that the couple had been living together with their two children, though they were no longer together and had started divorce proceedings. Records revealed that both separated in 2024 and filed for divorce the following year.

Police also revealed that Justin Fairfax had recently received court documents relating to the divorce case. Earlier in January, officers had visited the home after he accused his wife of attacking him.

County Police, Chief Kevin Davis said the murder-suicide appeared to stem from marital problems, though the investigation remained ongoing.

“Apparently, Mrs. Fairfax, at some point during these divorce proceedings, set up a lot of cameras inside the home. We reviewed those cameras, and we corroborated that the alleged assault never occurred,” Davis said.

The couple met while studying at Duke University and got married in 2006. Cerina Fairfax later became a dentist and ran a family dental clinic. She was also recognised in 2015 by the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Dentistry for her achievements.

A profile on her clinic’s website described her as someone who enjoyed reading, travelling, yoga, and spending time outdoors with her dogs, as well as being close to her family.

Police described the incident as shocking, especially to those who knew the family.

“It’s very sad for this community,” Davis said. “A lot of people who know the Fairfax family, everybody’s shocked. We’re shocked.”

Justin Fairfax was once seen as a rising political figure and had served as lieutenant governor. At one point in 2019, he was considered a possible successor to the state governor during a political crisis.

However, his political career later faced serious challenges after two women accused him of sexual assault. He denied all the allegations and was not charged. Despite this, the situation affected his public image and political journey.

He later contested for governor in 2021 but did not succeed, as he lost in the Democratic primary.

Reports also showed that he faced financial issues after leaving a law firm, including a tax debt that was later settled in 2021.

Following the news, political leaders expressed sadness and sympathy for the family, especially the children.

“We are keeping Cerina and Justin Fairfax’s family – especially their two children – in our prayers as we all process this shocking and horrifying news,” Virginia’s Democratic U.S. senators, Mark Warner and Tim Kaine, said in a joint statement.

The current lieutenant governor of Virginia also reacted, describing the situation as deeply painful.

“My thoughts are with their children, loved ones, and numerous friends,” Hashmi said in a statement. “Along with so many in the Commonwealth, I am filled with sorrow; I await further insights from our law enforcement officials.”
