INEC updates website, considers ADC

CITIZENS COMPASS— The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has recognised former Senate President, David Mark, as the national chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

INEC has also recognised the former Governor of Osun State, Rauf Aregbesola, as national secretary of the party.

The Commission updated its website to bring about this.

Recall that in April, INEC removed the Mark-led executive from its portal but the recent development has recognised the ADC leadership.

The fresh update was noticed on Thursday evening.

Earlier, the commission cited a ruling by the Court of Appeal concerning the internal leadership crisis in the party.

The Mark-led faction of the ADC, along with Nafiu Bala, a former national vice-chairman, have both continued to lay claim to the party’s leadership structure, deepening the crisis within the opposition party.

Yesterday, the Supreme Court of Nigeria had yesterday directed that the matter be returned to the Federal High Court for proper hearing and determination of the issues surrounding the leadership dispute.

Delivering a unanimous judgment, a five-member panel of the apex court, led by Justice Mohammed Garba, faulted the Court of Appeal’s earlier order which directed parties in the suit to maintain the status quo ante bellum.

Following the ruling, INEC’s updated portal now reflects the ADC leadership structure as currently recognised, with David Mark listed at the helm of the party.

However, in a fresh twist, the Supreme Court of Nigeria had yesterday directed that the matter be returned to the Federal High Court for proper hearing and determination of the issues surrounding the leadership dispute.
