Iyaloja of Ikorodu speaks on her selection, warns rumour mongers

CITIZENS COMPASS —The Iyaloja of Ikorodu, Mrs Adebukola Osho, has shed more light about her selection process warning market men and women against disseminating false information about the process.

She gave the warning yesterday, in an interview with Citizens Compass in Ikorodu, Lagos.

She said spreading and disseminating fake information could destroy the market, community and a nation.

She said the supervision of her appointment process is constitutionally under the purview of the Local Government Secretariat.

“Our people should stop spreading rumour as it could destroy the market and community.

“The process of selecting Iyaloja of any market is vested on the local government where the market is situated.

Market stakeholders will nominate a candidate whose name will be sent to the local government for confirmation and to traditional rulers for ratification,

she said.

She said in reference to the wide agitations and the misinformation making the rounds on the appointment of the Iyaoloja General of Ikorodu Division has been settled.

According to her, during the life of the former Iyaoloja of Ikorodu, Alhaja Taofikat Allison, there was an existing structure for the market in Ikorodu Local Government, the heads of each local government and Local Council Development Area (LCDA) understood their roles.

“The Iyaloja General, Chief Mrs Folashade Tinubu Ojo, said all LG and LCDAs should have market heads.

“All the heads(iyalojas) will be under the supervision of the iyaloja of the division.

The heads of each LG and LCDA should manage affairs of the markets within their jurisdiction, that is what Iyaloja General told us,

she said.

However, people started spreading fake information that she is no longer the head of Ikorodu central market since the Iyalode general for the division comes from the central.

She said market men and women held a series of meetings to nominate me as Iyaloja for Ikorodu central and I accepted it since it was a role I have been playing during the lifetime of our former Iyaloja.

On several occasions as Iyaloja, I have been invited to nominate members in the market as a beneficiary of government schemes

and empowerment programme sponsored by lawmakers.

“Members will come to me and put down their names and I will transmit to the appropriate quarters and they will receive it with a smile, I still have their records.

“I also conducted the distribution of  palliatives by Senator Abiru, empowerment by federal lawmaker, MHR, Jimi Benson and distributions of food items and 3kg gas cylinder filled by the Council chairman, Hon. Wasiu Adesina.

Recall that the former Iyaloja of Ikorodu died in July 2023 and was buried according to Muslim rites.
