Lagos shuts Chrisland school

CITIZENS COMPASS– LAGOS State government has ordered the closure of Chrisland School, Opebi area of the state, over the death of a student.

This was contained in a statement signed by the State Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Folasade Adefisayo who said the closure was ordered pending the outcome of a full investigation into the unfortunate incident.

While commiserating with the bereaved parents, Mr and Mrs Adeyemi, she said the closure was on behalf of the State Ministry of Education.

The Commissioner for Education prayed for the repose of the soul of the deceased.

The statement partly reads,

We also note the impact of this unfortunate event on family, friends and acquaintance of Whytney and call for calm as we assure that no effort will be spared in investigating the incident”,

the Commissioner stated.

Whitney Adeniran, a student of Chrisland’s Opebi Ikeja branch, died during a sports event on February 9, 2023 at Agege Stadium.

Recall that Blessing, the deceased’s mother, accused Chrisland of negligence as her family continued questioning the school.

She said the school made no provision for emergency response at the event, hence didn’t administer first aid.

The mother said the girl had no pre-existing heart condition despite the doctor’s allusion to a cardiac arrest.

But Folasade Adefisayo, Lagos education commissioner, says the school is now closed, pending an ongoing probe.

Earlier while reacting to public criticism following the 12-year-old student’s death, the management at Chrisland School said Whitney had reported “not-too-buoyant” health on January 20, contrary to claims by her parents.

In a video, the bereaved father was seen crying for justice as regards his daughter’s death which he claimed was suspicious.

He called on the pathology arm of Lagos State Government not to tamper with the autopsy report of the deceased saying that he will head for court incase of suspicion.

Nigerians especially parents have been condemning the death.

A cross section of parents who spoke with Citizens Compass described it as insensitive and confusing.
