Lawyer who faulted Tinubu’s re-election bid dies
CITIZENS COMPASS– Barrister Jesutega Onokpasa, a public commentator who recently faulted the re-election bid of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is reportedly dead.
He was known for his strong support of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Onokpasa was passionate about Tinubu’s Presidential bid in 2023.
His stance for Tinubu later went sour as he criticised Tinubu’s leadership on a television station in May 2025.
The news of his passing was shared on Tuesday by a supporter of the APC, Okezie J. Atañi, who posted the information on social media.
At press time the cause of his death was unknown.
Onokpasa had served as a member of the APC Presidential Campaign Council during the 2023 general election. He was part of the party’s Publicity Committee and often spoke on TV to defend and explain the government’s actions.
He was especially known for his open and strong support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. However, in a surprising turn, he recently announced that he would no longer support Tinubu’s re-election in 2027. His stance was upon the claim that critics like Daniel Bwala who fought them during the 2023 election campaign were being compensated with positions. He had as such vowed not to support the president in 2027.
He also said his decision was also influenced by the “worsening insecurity, deepening economic hardship, and the administration’s alleged neglect of loyal party members.”
