League intensifies push for Special Seats for Women Bill

CITIZENS COMPASS— The League of Women Voters of Nigeria (NILOWV), Lagos Chapter, Kosofe Constituency, on Thursday intensified its advocacy for the passage of the Special Seats for Women Bill.

The league intensified the push during a rally which was held within its jurisdiction.

The group convener, Abiodun Oshiga, said the peaceful demonstration underscores a growing demand for increased female representation in Nigeria’s political landscape, aiming to ensure that women’s voices are not only heard but also reflected in decision-making processes nationwide.

Oshiga, who led the advocacy, brought together members of the league in a peaceful and organised campaign within the Kosofe Constituency In a renewed push for inclusive governance.

The convener, while presenting a formal document in support of the Special Seats for Women Bill, emphasised that the initiative is rooted in the urgent need to amplify the voices of Nigerian women voters, particularly in Lagos State.

He added that initiatives were also to secure equitable representation at all levels of governance.

She noted that the advocacy is part of a broader movement to promote gender balance in political participation, stressing that sustainable development cannot be achieved without the active inclusion of women in leadership.

The convener reiterated that the proposed bill would serve as a strategic step toward correcting long-standing gender disparities in Nigeria’s political system and express gratitude to key supporters of the cause.

The convener expressed gratitude to the Chairperson of NILOWV Lagos Chapter, Hon Adetola Abubakar, and the Vice Chairperson, Mrs Asemota Lauretta, for their unwavering support and commitment to advancing women’s political inclusion.

According to her, the peaceful advocacy not only highlighted the determination of women in Kosofe Constituency but also reinforced a collective call for legislative action that will ensure Nigerian women have a stronger presence and influence in governance across the nation.

The Citizens Compass reports that Hon. Kafilat Ogbara, Member House of Representative representative Kosofe federal constituency has earlier sponsored the bill to the National Assembly.
