CITIZENS COMPASS— The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has expressed satisfaction with the Nigerian military after it launched a massive attack on bandits in Sokoto on Wednesday and Friday. The group had issued a 14-day ultimatum to the Minister of Defense to act decisively against bandits in Sokoto State or resign his position.

‎‎MURIC’s new position was given in a press statement issued on Saturday, 29th August, 2026 by the group’s Executive Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola.

‎‎The statement reads:

‎Sequel to our 14-day ultimatum issued on Saturday, August 22, 2026, in which we called upon the Minister of Defense, General Christopher Musa (rtd), to stop terrorist attacks on Sokoto or resign, we are pleased to report sustained military operations against bandits in Sokoto State by air and land particularly on Wednesday 26th and Friday 28th August, 2026.

‎‎”Reports indicate that troops of the Nigerian Army launched a major clearance operation against armed groups in Maikujera, Rabah Local Government Area of Sokoto State.

‎‎”The military deployed Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs) and other military assets while soldiers moved in to dislodge the bandits from the area. Many of the bandits were killed as survivors fled the area (https://tribuneonlineng.com/sokoto-army-kills-scores-of-bandits-in-clearance-operation/amp/).

Confirming the military operation, the spokesperson for the Nigerian Army’s 8 Division, Lt Col Olaniyi Osoba, described the operation as ‘hugely successful’.

‎”MURIC commends Nigeria’s gallant soldiers for this onslaught. We also thank the Minister of Defense for taking prompt action against the invaders.

‎In the face of this ongoing military action, we hereby lift our 14-day ultimatum which was due to expire on Monday, September,7, 2026.

‎‎”MURIC is a middle-roader. We do not take extreme positions. We issued the ultimatum when it was obvious that the caliphate was endangered. We will not delay its lifting by one day once we have seen the military going into action against the terrorists.

‎‎”Nonetheless, we call on the army to sustain the tempo and to leave no stone unturned until no single terrorist remains on Sokoto soil. Sokoto is the Makkah of Nigeria. Its significance to Muslims must not be desecrated or diminished.
