My family in danger—popular broadcaster, Oriyomi Hamzat
CITIZENS COMPASS— Ace broadcaster and investigator, Alhaji Oriyomi Hamzat, has said that his immediate family were being exposed to danger due to the investigative nature of his job.
Hamzat, the proprietress of Agidigbo FM in Ibadan, Oyo State, said occasionally, his immediate family members usually hide their identity from members of the public.
Hamzat is popular for his activism on the radio programme which has been unfolding mysteries.
The broadcaster carved a niche for himself by fighting against the fundamental human rights of many Nigerians.
He recently declared his governorship ambition in Oyo State under the platform of Accord Party.
Speaking during an interview segment posted by a social media user, alakeade, Hamzat said: The secret there is that my child dare not introduce himself as “Hamzat’s child for fear of being attacked. My wife dare not introduce herself as the wife of Oriyomi Hamzat.
Is there no time they are not in danger even as I speak? I change their location from time to time.
When I was filling a form sent to you, I wrote “complicated” at the section for marital status because I am under obligation not to reveal my marital status.
I promised them that they would not suffer from the hazards of my profession and I am working to ensure this.
I don’t post my family matters on social media: not because my family is not large. I am the owner of the calling and they should not be allowed to suffer.
My radio programme deals with the high and mighty in the society which has brood opponents.
There was a time I was implicated and imprisoned. I was once in the DSS custody where I used a container to either urinate or drink.
After I regained my freedom, I headed straight to the hospital to flush my system due to the harsh condition in custody.
In custody, I was privileged to check social media and the first post that popped up was about Oriyomi Hamzat and in the comment section, some people were jubilating about my arrest. I was nobody as at then, and my little income was spent on the less privileged. I was arrested due to the death of one of the less privileged I was taken care of. I read the comments further and the one which attracted me most read, ‘Oriyomi has stepped on toes.’ I meditated on the post but when I probed further, the sender was the son of a traditionalist ruler who was sacked as a result of an investigation conducted on him through my radio programme.
The irony of it was that some of those who welcome me upon my arrival into the prisons were those who have been indicated in one way or the other.
Some of them have become clerics.
