
Road crash: FRSC confirms fatalities’ figure of Kano athletes
CITIZENS COMPASS– The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Kano State Sector Command, on Saturday, said a total number of 21 athletes have lost their lives to a road crash at Gadar Yankifi (Yankifi bridge) in GarunMallam Local Government Area of the State.
The athletes were returning to the State from the just concluded National Sports Festival in Abeokuta, Ogun State when the tragedy occurred.
Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun has mourned the athletes.
The incident has generated debate on social media as many wondered if concerned authorities did not sponsor the safety of the athletes.
They wondered whether the government could not provide a good bus or sponsor their flight.
However, the FRSC has put the fatalities’ figure at 21.
Spokesperson for the Command, Abdullahi Labaran, disclosed the figure in a statement saying 32 occupants were in the bus as at the time of the crash.
According to FRSC, the occupants were 31 male adults and one female adult.
The statement reads, “We regret to announce a fatal road traffic crash that occurred today, Saturday 31st May, 2025, at approximately 1230hrs along the Kano–Kaduna Road, precisely at Gadar Yankifi in Garun Malam Local Government Area of Kano State.
“The unfortunate crash involved a single vehicle, a Toyota Coaster Bus with registration number KN041 A17, belonging to the Kano State Government.
“Preliminary investigation indicates that 21 persons sadly lost their lives, while the remaining sustained varying degrees of injuries.”
He said the injured victims, as well as the remains have been evacuated to Nasarawa Specialist Hospital, Kano.
