Shops, buildings razed in Onitsha tanker explosion

MANY shops and buildings were reportedly razed on Friday, at Upper Iweka junction, Onitsha, Anambra State, after a tanker laden with Premium Motor Spirit exploded.

Eyewitnesses’ accounts said the tanker had broken down along the busy Onitsha-Owerri Road in front of the Relief Market before it went up in flames.

The fire which started at about 8.30am reportedly caused traffic gridlock which lasted for hours.

However, fire services both from Anambra and Delta states have done the needful though reports from the axis said there was shortage of water in the area.

At press time, traders were seen counting their losses.
