CITIZENS COMPASS— A construction worker was on Monday, trapped to death while another was injured when a storey building collapsed in Lagos State.

The collapse occurred during the day, at Adedoyin Street, Ijegun, Ikotun in Alimosho Local Government Area of the State.

The Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyinyolu, confirmed the collapse to Citizens Compass.

In his updates, Oke-Osanyinyolu said: The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) today, Monday 26th October, 2026, once again demonstrated the efficacy of the State’s robust emergency response architecture with swift interventions in a building collapse and multiple traffic-related incidents across the metropolis.

The Agency’s primary response was to a distress call received at about 1:44pm regarding a building collapse at Adedoyin Street, Ijegun, Ikotun in Alimosho Local Government Area.

The Beta Team from Igando Base was immediately activated and deployed to the scene. Upon arrival, responders discovered a storey building that collapsed while undergoing manual demolition. Preliminary information gathered at the scene revealed that the incident occurred while workers were manually breaking down the structure. Regrettably, one worker was trapped in the rubble while another who sustained injury to his hand had been taken to the hospital for treatment before the arrival of the Agency’s Response Team.

The Agency’s Response Team in collaboration with the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and LASAMBUS immediately commenced a coordinated search and rescue operation with utmost professionalism and adherence to safety protocols to ensure the safe recovery of the trapped victim.

Operation is ongoing and the area has been cordoned off to prevent secondary hazards.

The Lagos State Government assures residents that a thorough investigation will be conducted to determine the immediate and remote causes of the collapse and to ensure full compliance with extant building control regulations.

While the rescue operation at Ijegun is ongoing, LASEMA Response Teams across the State have managed and concluded three other incidents with commendable efficiency.

In the early hours of today, the Tiger Team from C3 Base responded to a road traffic accident at Iyana Oworo outward Third Mainland Bridge. The incident which was reported at about 1:30am involved a Lexus Jeep with registration number BDG 404 KA.

Upon arrival, the team observed that the vehicle had somersaulted as a result of loss of control due to reckless driving and was badly damaged. One adult male who sustained injuries was rushed to the nearest hospital before the arrival of the Agency’s team.

Fortunately, no loss of life was recorded. The Agency’s team cordoned off the scene to prevent secondary incidents, managed traffic along the axis and successfully recovered the vehicle off the road with the aid of a private tow truck to a lay-by.

The operation has been concluded and the corridor has been restored for free vehicular movement.

The Agency’s Response Team in a combined operation with teams from Cappa and Igando Bases, alongside the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and LASAMBUS, has successfully extricated and recovered the trapped victim from the rubble of the collapsed storey building that was undergoing manual demolition.

Tragically, the victim was recovered dead. The body was professionally bagged and handed over to the Nigeria Police Force, Ikotun Division in the presence of the Divisional Police Officer, and thereafter handed over to the family in line with established protocols. The incident scene has been fully cordoned off to ensure safety and to allow for further assessment by relevant authorities.

The Lagos State Government expresses its deepest condolences to the family of the deceased and wishes the injured worker who was earlier taken to the hospital a full and speedy recovery. The Government assures the public that a thorough investigation will be instituted to determine the cause of the collapse and to ensure strict enforcement of building control regulations to prevent future occurrences.
