Truck crushes driver, 13 passengers to death in Lagos 

.. nine critically injured 

CITIZENS COMPASS – THE driver of a 24-passenger bus and 13 of his passengers were crushed to death on Sunday, following a crash with the commercial bus and a truck in Lagos State.

Nine other passengers were said to be critically injured during the crash which occurred at Agemowo Bus-stop, along Badagry – Ijanikin road. 

The Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Oluwafemi Oke-Osanyintolu confirmed the incident to Citizenscompass on Sunday, July 9, 2023. 

“Accident happened between a truck and a 24- passenger Commercial bus during the heavy rain downpour.

” The bus driver was said to be on a high speed and driving recklessly  lost control and ran into an oncoming truck.

“Fourteen out of the 24 passengers including the bus driver was confirmed dead on spot, 9 critically injured and all taken to General Hospital Badagry.

” Further information revealed, one out of the injured 9 was also confirmed dead at the Hospital

“All corpse has been deposited at the Hospital Morgue while the 8 survival are receiving treatment at the hospital intensive care unit. 

*Both accidented vehicles has been cleared off the road and taken to the Police Station.”

Also confirming the accident was the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Lagos State, which said a total number of 24 passengers were involved in the crash. 

Spokesperson of the Command, Olabisi Sonusi disclosed this in a statement on Sunday. 

” A road traffic crash occurred in the early hours of Sunday, 9 July, 2023, along Badagry – Ijanikin road at about 0731 hrs.

” The crash involved two vehicles, a truck with registration number AKM 926 YQ, and a Mazda L2000 Bus marked MUS 411 XU.

“A total of 24 people were involved in the unfortunate incident. According to a Statement from the Sector Public Education Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Lagos Sector Command, Superintendent Route Commander Olabisi Sonusi, 15 people comprising nine male adults, 5 Female adults and 1 female child were feared killed.

“Nine people sustained varying degree of serious injuries ( 5 males, 4 females), one of them was reported to have later given up the ghost at the hospital. Fourteen were brought in dead from the crash scene.

” The injured victims are currently receiving treatment at the General Hospital, Badagry. Meanwhile, bodies of the dead victims have since been deposited at the Morgue in the same hospital.

” The Sector Commander, Lagos Sector Command, Corps Commander Babatunde Farinloye, Commiserate with the family of the dead victims while wishing the injured quick recovery. 

” He further directed that families of the victims should visit the hospital for necessary action and also the Badagry Unit Command of the Corps for any information.

” He reiterated the need for caution on the parts of drivers and all motorists. According to him, this crash was avoidable if common sense and defensive driving techniques had been deployed on the parts of the drivers.

” It was reported that the Crash occured as a result of Speeding and overtaking under the heavy downpour by the drivers who were traveling on opposite directions, this he said, resulted in loss of control and head on collision on the parts of the affected Vehicles.

“He warned motorists to desist from speeding, obey  road traffic regulations at all times, and be more cautious as the road is under reconstruction. The rainy season is here, and it is pertinent to allow common sense speed limit to prevail.

*He therefore warned that the Command will continue to bring to book all perpetrators of road traffic infractions.

“Finally he advised occupants of all vehicles not to leave their safety in the hands of the drivers but rather see themselves as stakeholders such that they also help caution drivers any time violations are observed while on a trip.”
