Truck rams into school children, as mob attempts lynching security operatives in Lagos

A YET-TO- BE ascertained number of school children have reportedly died in Lagos, Tuesday, after a truck suffered brake failure and rammed into them.

 

The situation attracted a mob which attempted to lynch some security

It was gathered that the children were  returning from school when the incident occurred but the exact number of casualties could not be ascertained.

 

The accident reportedly occurred along Isheri Road, just before the Ojodu Police Station.

 

Economic and vehicular movement were paralysed as a result of the incident.

 

A video on the social media confirmed this as street urchin reportedly took advantage of the situation to cause mayhem. 

 

According to eye witnesses’ account, the truck driver ran into the children just outside Ojodu Grammar School and sped off.

 

An eye witness Joseph Osinaga said, “The truck driver’s action infuriated sympathisers who took a chase after him, apprehended him around Ogba and drew the attention of Policemen from Ojodu Division as the mob later  attacked the Police station.”

 

An eye witness who pleaded anonymity said the aftermath of the incident led to an attempted mob attack on some officials of Lagos State Traffic Management Authority LASTMA, and Policemen at the scene.  

 

Spokesperson, Lagos State Police Command, CSP Adekunle Ajisebutu, said the casualty figure is yet to be confirmed. He said, “We are on top of the situation. Adequate Policemen are on ground to maintain law and order and the situation is being professionally handled.”

 

It was gathered that the mob vandalised trucks around the area and were thriwing pepples  into the Police station. 

 

However, some security operatives were said to be deployed to the scene to calm the situation  They were said to have fired teargas and carniaters to disperse  the mob.

In a statement issued by Yemi Sule from Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) on behalf of LASEMA General Manager, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu did not specify the number of casualties but stated that normalcy had been restored.
It reads, “The Agency received a distress call at about 2:56 pm about a truck accident at Ogunusi Road, Grammar School Bus-stop, Ojodu Berger.
“However, the information gathered from LASTMA and NPF Officials at the scene revealed that an unidentified truck lost control and rammed into students returning from school.
“The incident led to severe injuries to some victims, others were discovered dead.
“This unfortunate incident provoked some bystanders into taking laws into their hand by lynching of NPF,  LASTMA Officials and other first responders at the scene, destroying vehicles and other properties.
“The number of fatalities and casualties could not be ascertained as at the time of reporting.
“The attack by the miscreants led the Emergency Team to head back to base as the scene was insecure and unsafe for rescue and recovery operations.”
