Video: Woman who gave alcohol to baby speaks
CITIZENS COMPASS—A nursing mother who was captured giving alcoholic drinks to a baby in a viral video has explained the rationale behind her action.
She said she was misrepresented by her viewers.
The woman presented her defense in another video.
According to her, the sachet captured in the controversial footage—believed to contain alcohol—had been emptied, thoroughly washed, and refilled with Coca-Cola prior to filming. She insisted that no harmful substance was given to her child and expressed deep regret over the public’s reaction.
According to her, the sachet originally contained Action Bitters, a popular alcoholic drink in Nigeria. She stated that she rinsed the sachet properly before pouring soft drink into it for the purpose of the video. To support her claim, a second clip shows her pouring Coca-Cola into an Action Bitters sachet, reportedly filmed before the initial video was made public.
Beside her in the apology video was a man introduced as her husband’s brother, who also backed her account. He affirmed that the liquid in question was not alcohol and assured the public that the child’s well-being was never at risk. “It was Coke. Not alcohol. The baby was never in danger,” he said.
Both the woman and the man apologized for the controversy caused by the video, acknowledging the poor judgment behind the idea and the unintended consequences it triggered online. The woman emphasized that she never intended to harm her child, adding, “I am truly sorry for what happened. It wasn’t what people thought.”
The video had earlier drawn condemnation from law enforcement authorities and the public, with many calling for swift investigation and possible prosecution. Police had described the act as both “illegal and dangerous,” and launched a search for the woman shortly after the footage went viral.
It remains unclear whether the clarification will influence the ongoing investigation, as authorities have yet to issue a response to the new video at the time of this report.
Meanwhile, some social media influencers have condemned the defense.
