12 years old boy, two others die in Lagos building collapse 

… Dog barks, refuses to eat

 

CITIZENS COMPASS —The body of a  12 years old boy and two other persons were recovered from the rubble of a collapsed two storey building on Friday, along Herbert Macaulay Way area of Lagos State. 

The trio were trapoed to death when the building with a pent house collapsed at about 9.30p.m.

Apart from the teenager, a man and woman were also trapped to death during the incident. 

They were said to be among some illegal occupants of the building which collapsed on them. 

Three other occupants were fortunate to have escaped unhurt.

The Coordinator, Lagos State Territorial District of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Mr Ibrahim Farinloye, confirmed to Citizens Compass that the deceased were the teenager and two adults, male and female. 

Eyewitnesses’ accounts said few minutes before the collapse, a dog belonging to one of the occupants hopped outside the building barking in an unusual manner, looking sorrowful, refused to eat or return to the house and thereafter, the collapse occured. 

Quit notices

The Lagos Building Control Agency (LASBCA) was said to have severally issued evacuation notices and all the original occupants had parked out and its ownet sold it out about four months ago.

Confirming the incident, Farinloye said, “A two-storey building with a pent house collapsed at about 0930 hours along Herbert Macaulay Way, Ebute Metta.

“It is suspected that a woman illegally occupying it is trapped though it is suspected that there could be two additional two people along with her but no one could confirm that except the woman.

The Lagos Building Control Agency (LASBCA) had issued evacuation notice several times and all the original occupants had parked out.

“It was alleged that the property had been sold out about four months ago. Three of the occupants jumped to safety with the assistance of neighbours.

“This has completed the number of people unaccounted for at the time of arrival of emergency management statutory agencies.

“According to accounts of residents, a dog in the collapsed building got to the building and started barking in a sorrowful manner and refused to eat or enter the building and after some minutes when the dog left the building then the building went down.”

It was learnt that operations were concluded at about 1.35p.m.
