
72-year-old, teenager trapped to death in Ikorodu building collapse

CITIZENS COMPASS– Three persons including a 72 years old man have been recovered dead at the scene of a collapsed building in Ota-Ona, Ikorodu, Lagos State.
Apary from the Septuagenarian, two other bodies including that of a male teenager of about 16-year-old were recovered from the rubbles of the collapsed building.
Citizens Compass reported that the Director, Lagos Fire & Rescue Service, Margret Adeseye, confirmed that 14 persons were feared trapped when a two-storey building collapsed at Number 7, Obafemi Awolowo Road, Ota-Ona, adjacent to a popular gas station along the road.
It was learnt that one more person was rescued at the scene bringing the number of those rescued to 11.
She confirmed the recovery of the bodies of the septuagenarian and that of the teenager.
Citizens Compass reported that 10 people were immediately rescued to the hospital for medical attention.
In its updates, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency(LASEMA) on Wednesday, said three bodies were recovered from the rubbles.
LASEMA Permanent Secretary, Dr Oluwafemi Oke-Osanyintolu, in the update said search and rescue operations were ongoing.
“Following distress alerts at the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, activated the State’s Emergency Response Plans from Agbowa, Alausa and Cappa.
“Upon arrival of the Agency’s Lion, Tiger and Eagle Response Teams at the incident scene, it was discovered that a two-storey building under construction had collapsed, with three victims trapped under the debris at the aforementioned location.
The cause of the collapsed building is yet to be ascertained as at the time of writing this report.
‘The three people trapped under the collapsed building have been recovered dead.
“Nine adult males were successfully rescued and attended to by LASEMA Pre-Hospital Care Unit.
“The Agency`s Heavy-duty equipment, ‘Excavator’, was deployed to aid in the quick rescue of victims trapped beneath the collapsed structure.
“The agency’s flood lights were also deployed to illuminate the incident scene.
“Search and Rescue Operation is still ongoing.
“Three bodies have been recovered so far.
“These include two male adults and a teenage female.
‘All the bodies have been handed over to Igbogbo Police Station.
“Search and Rescue Operation still on-going.
“Affected building in process of deconstruction to ground zero to ensure safety of people and the environment.”
Earlier, the Chairman of Ikorodu Local Government area of Lagos State, Mr Wasiu Adesina, described the incident as tragic, that resulted in the loss of three people’ s lives.
He was represented by Mr Lateef Afini, Secretary to the council who sai, “I want to assure you that the LG will do the needful to reduce this kind of disaster.
” I promised to visit the affected families,”
Speaking at the site of the collapse building, Mr Lanre Itameta, a member of the affected families, said that the families would not apportion blame on anybody but rather believed everything was in accordance with destiny adding that the construction commenced sometime in October 2024.
“We are unhappy but there is nothing we can do, we just want to believe it is destiny.
“The building collapse around 2:p.m while the children are praying because they could not go to the mosque due to Oro festival ,” he said
