CITIZENS COMPASS— A Chief Magistrate’s Court in Yola,Adamawa State, has arraigned an 87-year-old man, Dahiru Garba, for allegedly attacking the presiding judge of Mayo-Ine Area Court, Dauda Hamman, with a cutlass.
Garba, a resident of Korawa Village in Fufore Local Government Area, allegedly attacked the judge on August 31, 2026.
The Adamawa State Police Command said it has stepped into the matter.
Same for the Command, Suleiman Nguroje, confirmed the incident in a statement saying it occurred while the judge was handling a case involving Garba and another man, identified as Ismail Yusuf.
According to the Police, Garba allegedly used a cutlass to attack the judge, repeatedly striking his hand and inflicting serious injuries.
Nguroje said the suspect was arrested immediately after the incident and initially taken to the Divisional Police Headquarters in Fufore before the case was transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Yola on September 4 for further investigation.
Following the completion of the investigation, the police said Garba was arraigned on Monday before Chief Magistrate Court I, Yola, presided over by Chief Magistrate Ismail Bello Shelleng.
He was charged with causing grievous hurt, contrary to Section 219 of the Penal Code Law of Adamawa State, 2018.
The charge was read and interpreted to the octogenarian, to which he pleaded guilty.
The police said the defendant attributed his action to the devil and expressed regret over the incident.
The court subsequently ordered that Garba be remanded at the Yola Correctional Facility pending further hearing.
The Commissioner of Police, Kabir Hassan, assured residents that the command would ensure diligent prosecution of the case.
He also reiterated the commitment of the command to protecting judicial officers and maintaining law and order across the state.
