WAEC apologises for writing exams at 11 p.m

CITIZENS COMPASS – The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has apologised for the recent night examination during the ongoing 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

The examination body apologised for the delay in conducting English Language Paper 2.

In parts of Benue State, some students had to write the objective section of their English exam late at night under difficult conditions. The examination papers had arrived late as candidates used phone flashlights and lanterns to complete the sessios.

The affected students had already finished the essay part of the exam but waited for several hours before the examination officer arrived with the objective questions. The delay pushed the examination well into the night, with some centers finishing as late as 11 p.m. on Wednesday, May 28.

A student from a secondary school in Ogbadibo Local Government Area, who preferred to remain anonymous, described the situation: “We waited for hours after writing the essay. When the exam officer finally came, we had to use our phone lights and lanterns to write the objective section. It was very stressful.”

WAEC responded on Thursday morning through Moyosola Adesina, the Acting Head of the Public Affairs Department. The council admitted to facing several challenges but said it still achieved its goals.

“While maintaining the integrity and security of our examination, we faced considerable challenges primarily due to our major aim of preventing leakage of any paper,” the statement said.

WAEC acknowledged the importance of conducting exams on time and apologized for the inconvenience caused to candidates, schools, and parents.

“In spite of our best efforts, we encountered logistical hurdles, security concerns and socio-cultural factors that negatively influenced our operations,” the council added.

WAEC assured that it remains committed to upholding the highest standards in exam conduct and to supporting academic excellence in the region.
