With Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, Lagos will move from politics of patronage to politics of purpose
By Adewole Ireti
CITIZENS COMPASS— Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour (GRV), a firm believer in progressive governance, has reiterated his commitment to emulate the political maxim of David Easton, who famously postulated that politics is the authoritative allocation of values, essentially, a tool for giving back to society. For GRV, politics should not be a game of self-interest or power play, but a noble platform to redistribute opportunities, welfare, and justice. His approach aligns with the ideals of participatory democracy where the people are at the center of governance decisions, not just passive observers but active stakeholders.
He has consistently frowned at the exploitative template the APC-led government in Lagos continues to adopt, especially in matters affecting the vulnerable and marginalized. Citing the demolition of markets and forced evictions without adequate compensation or alternative arrangements, GRV likened their strategy to the haunting words of Jean-Jacques Rousseau , who once said, “Man is born free, but everywhere he is in chains.” To him, Lagosians have been systematically caged in an environment where governance appears more oppressive than responsive, and where policies seem tailored for the elite rather than the people.
With a vision rooted in freedom, equity, and shared prosperity, GRV is poised to dismantle the entrenched structures of political captivity and modern economic slavery in Lagos. He believes true leadership must be about restoring dignity to the people — creating jobs, ensuring housing rights, strengthening local businesses, and uplifting the voices of the unheard. For him, this is not just a political ambition but a moral duty to liberate Lagosians from decades of economic stranglehold and governance indifference.
As 2027 draws near, GRV’s message becomes even clearer. Lagos must move from politics of patronage to politics of purpose. His aspiration is not just to win an election but to win back the soul of Lagos. In doing so, he remains steadfast in his resolve to build a government of inclusivity, one where every market woman, artisan, student, and professional can feel the impact of governance. In the spirit of Easton’s ideal and Rousseau’s warning, GRV seeks to spark a people-centered revolution that would return power to its rightful owner: the people.
Together, we will deliver Lagos.
