CITIZENS COMPASS—The Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Blessing Agbebaku, has resigned from his position.

Agbebaku’s resignation comes amid reported efforts by some lawmakers to remove him from the position.

His media aide, Ivy Ebojele, confirmed the resignation on Monday saying more information would be made public later.

The Speaker reportedly decided to leave his position after lawmakers began making moves to impeach him. The details of what led to the disagreement within the assembly have not been fully disclosed.

Rather than wait for the lawmakers to begin a formal process to remove him, Agbebaku reportedly stepped down voluntarily.

Ebojele confirmed that the former Speaker had resigned but did not give further details about the circumstances surrounding his decision. She also did not state when more information would be released.

The development has created a leadership vacancy in the Edo State legislature. It is not yet clear who will take over as acting Speaker or when lawmakers will choose a permanent replacement.

The number of lawmakers involved in the reported impeachment move and the specific issues behind the disagreement have also not been made public.

Further developments are expected as the Edo State House of Assembly decides on its next leadership arrangement.
