Borrow pit kills seven Almajiris, one hospitalised 

CITIZENS COMPASSA borrow-pit has collapsed killing seven Qur’anic School pupils, popularly known as Almajiris, studying at Malam Dan-umma Qurnic School at Bayan Science, Badariya area, in Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State.

The School proprietor Malam Dan-umma, confirmed the incident to newsmen within the school premises in Badariya Bayan Science.

Speaking shortly after the ugly incident he said the seven pupils died on the spot while one was hospitalized as a result of the collapse of the borrow pit that collapsed and buried them while collecting laterite sands.

Today is one of the saddest days of my life. What happened was, I assigned them to go to the top of the hill near the school to excavate clay and gravel to mend holes inside their rooms against the upcoming rainy season. But before they came back, I was told a heavy chunk of the laterite hill had fallen over them, ” Dan-umma sadly said.

He added by saying, “I immediately rushed to the scene of the incident, where I confirmed seven of them were dead, and one other who survived was rushed to the hospital in Birnin Kebbi,*

Malam Dan-umma further said that the corpses of the seven deceased pupils were deposited at the mortuary of Sir Yahaya Memorial Hospital in Birnin Kebbi before being taken to their parents for funeral.

A resident of the area and a Special Adver to Governor Nasir Idris on Pilgrims Welfare Agency, Zayyanu Sanka, expressed his deep sorrow over the tragedy and said the government would look into the possibility of banning excavation of clay, soil, or gravel on top of such hills as a deliberate measure to tackle future reoccurrences of such incidents.
