Driver, passengers crushed to death on Lagos/Ibadan Expressway

CITIZENS COMPASS – FOUR passengers including the driver of a commercial bus on Sunday, met their untimely death along Lagos/Ibadan Expressway, during a lone accident imvolving a Foton bus with number plate, AGL 989 YA. 

The accident occurred at Ayetoro inbound Lagos, Mowe/Ibafo Divisional Command, Obafemi- Owode Local Government Area at about 9.59 a.m.

According to eyewitnesses’ accounts, the Foton bus was on motion when it suffered tyre bursts leading to the bus sommersaulting and landed in a ditch.

The accounts said, “the Foton commercial bus was coming from Ibadan with 15 passengers (three males and 12 females), inbound Lagos, when the rear tyre on the driver’s side burst on motion at Ayetoro axis along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway and the vehicle sommersaulted into a ditch.”

15 passengers including three males and 12 females were on board of the vehicle when it summersaulted. 

11 of them were said to have suffered varying degrees of injuries while four, three males and a female lost their lives on the spot. 

Rescue operation was performed by Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps, (TRACE), Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the Nigeria Police Force who rescued those injured to the hospital.

TRACE spokesperson, Babatunde Akinbiyi who confirmed the incident to Citizens Compass said those injured were taken to FAMOBIS Hospital by FRSC and OGSAS  while the presumed dead bodies were deposited at Idera morgue before the arrival of TRACE. 

It was learnt that the accident disrupted free flow of traffic before normalcy was restored. 

Meanwhile the accidented vehicle was taken from the ditch to Mowe Police station.

In his updates, Akinbiyi said,”Out of the 15 passengers on board the bus, four (Three males and One females, including the driver) were confirmed dead, and had been taken to Idera morgue, while the 12 injured, all females, were taken to FAMOBIS Hospital by FRSC and OGSAS, Ogun State Accident and Emergency Services.

“While TRACE, FRSC, POLICE and OGSAS, commiserate with the families of the deceased passengers, drivers are again enjoined to avoid excessive speed, use of fairly used tyres and uphold simple traffic rules and regulations in view of it’s attendant consequences.”
