Former governor reportedly dies

CITIZENS COMPASS— Former military administrator in Bauchi State, Brigadier-General (Rtd.) Abu Ali has reportedly died.

The Bauchi State government announced the death in a statement on Monday.

According to the statement signed by Mukhtar Gidado, the special adviser on media and publicity to the Governor, Bala Mohammed, he mourned the loss and sent his “heartfelt condolences” to the family of the late general, especially his children, as well as the people of Bassa Nge Kingdom in Kogi State, where the retired officer came from.

The statement partly reads:

“It is with profound sadness and a heavy heart that His Excellency, Governor Bala Mohammed, on behalf of his family, Government and the good people of Bauchi State, mourns the passing of Brigadier-General (Rtd ) Abu Ali, former military administrator of Bauchi state.”

The government highlighted the period when General Abu Ali served as military administrator from September 1990 to January 1992 during General Ibrahim Babangida’s administration. According to the statement, “General Abu Ali served with distinction” and was known for developmental achievements that shaped the state.

During his time in office, the Bauchi Township Water Project was commissioned, providing essential water supply to the state capital. He also worked to strengthen the Tomato Processing Company to boost local agriculture. In addition, he founded the Wikki Tourists Football Club, which has grown into a major symbol of pride for the state.

General Abu Ali was also praised for his leadership during difficult moments. The statement noted that in 1991, when ethno-religious violence broke out in Tafawa Balewa and other areas, he took firm steps by imposing a curfew and deploying security forces. His “firm but yet thoughtful approach” was said to have helped restore order and prevent the crisis from worsening.

“Governor Bala Mohammed salutes late General Abu Ali’s humble and dignified surrender of power, when he peacefully handed over to a democratically elected government in January 1992, demonstrating respect for democratic governance.”

“In this time of grief, Governor Bala Mohammed extends heartfelt condolences to the family of the late General, especially his children, and people of the Bassa Nge Kingdom in Kogi state. He also asks the people of Bauchi State to join in prayer for strength and comfort for the family, and for the peaceful repose of his soul. May the memory of Brigadier-General (Rtd.) Abu Ali continues to inspire us all as a servant-leader, a visionary, and a man of courage and compassion.”
