Lagos releases names of train accident victims

Lagos State Government on Friday, March 10, 2023, released the identities of three of its six workers who lost their lives to an accident involving a train and staff bus at PWD bus-stop, off Lagos- Abeokuta Expressway.

 

The incident occurred at about 8am on Thursday, March 9, 2023.

 

The identities of the staffs were revealed during condolence visits by Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu to some of the affected families.

Among them are a Youth Corps member, Juliana Aina, who was serving in the Ministry of Education before her untimely death.

 

Other names include Esther Rokosu, a staff of the Lagos Internal Revenue Service (LIRS), and 54-year-old Victoria Johnson, a Social Welfare Officer at Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH).

 

Similarlly, colleagues of one of the late workers, Yisa Olusesi have taken to the social media to mourn his demise.

Until his death, Yisa lives in Ejigbo and worked with the Office of the Auditor General where he was deployed to since 2019.

One of the late workers was said to have been called upon to relieve someone who was on leave unknown to her that she was heading for the journey of no return.

 

During the visit, the state governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu was accompanied by the Head of Service, Mr. Hakeem Muri-Okunola, and some members of the State Executive Council to sympathise with the bereaved families.

Recall that a Lagos State Government staff bus with bus code 33, carrying civil servants and some dependants from Isolo to Alausa had a head-on collision with a commercial train at PWD Bus-Stop, along Agege Motor Road, in the State on Thursday.

The accident occurred when the Lagos State Government staff bus was about to cross the rail track and during the process, it collided with a commercial train at the location. Six out of the 85 passengers on the bus died while 79 civil servants and their dependants on the bus sustained varying degrees of injuries.

Governor Sanwo-Olu who was received by the three families he visited in Jakande Estate, Oke Afa, and Ikotun areas of Lagos State, commiserated with the bereaved families and prayed for them over their irreplaceable losses.

 

He urged them to take the death of their loved ones in good faith and see it as an act of God.

 

The Governor visited the families of Esther Rokosu, a staff of Lagos Internal Revenue Service (LIRS), and 54-year-old Mrs. Victoria Johnson nee Dada, a Social Welfare Officer of Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH).

He also paid a condolence visit to the home of the Youth Corps member, Miss Aina Oreoluwa Juliana.

During the visit, prayers were offered for the deceased families, various ministries, and the Lagos State Government.

Following the Train/Bus Acciden, latest updates revealed that the survivours have been transferred to some hospitals for medical attention.

Ealier, Governor Sanwo-Olu has canvassed for blood donation for some of the victims who have lost so much blood to the accident.

Reports from LASUTH said five surgeries were carried out on Thursday.

At press time, blood donation was ongoing in some of the health facilities including General Hospital Gbagada, Lagos state Accident and Emergency Centre toll gate and General Hospital Lagos Island.

Others are Folarin Coker Staff Clinic Alausa Ikeja and LASUTH.
